Exhibition dates: 1 April – 7 May
Gallery hours: Wed to Sat: 12 – 5pm
Sarah Scout Presents is delighted to announce Andrea Eckersley's solo exhibition Shed by the sun in eclipse.
Shed by the sun in eclipse comprises bronze sculptures, wall work and new paintings on linen and continues Eckersley’s ongoing investigation into the material aspects of painting with a particular focus on its surfaces.
Painting is customarily understood as a form of mark making that renders materials and arrangements of lines, or areas of colour, into compositions on surfaces. While a painting can be conceived of as more than a marked surface, it is primarily these surface features and their particular qualities and arrangements that are said to comprise the material aspects of a painting. For Shed by the sun in eclipse Eckersley works with a range of surfaces including painting and sculpture and surface effects such as those achieved with light and shadow. The exhibition approaches painting by way of the activation of surfaces in an event felt as a difference in intensity.
Andrea Eckersley is a Melbourne-based artist and writer with a background in fashion. She recently completed her PhD in FIne Arts at Monash University and currently lectures at RMIT University. Eckersley's recent solo and group exhibitions include Surface Activation, MADA Galleries, Monash University (2015); Exit/Entry Points (curated by Matthew Perkins), Glen Eira City Council Gallery (2014); Depthless Flatness (curated by Bryan Spier and Steven Rendall), Incidents Above a Bar (2014); Surface Event, Platform Contemporary Art Spaces (2014); Colour Relations, Nellie Castan Gallery (2012), all Melbourne and Spatial Planes, Spiro Grace Art Rooms, Brisbane (2011).
